Transition to Secondary School

CARTOON IMAGE OF A SECONDARY SCHOOL

At the end of Year 6, the majority of our pupils go on to Cleeve School in Bishop's Cleeve, but some will go to Winchcombe School or Tewkesbury School. Some children will be accepted into one of the Gloucester Grammar Schools or to Pate's Grammar School in Cheltenham. If you scroll to the bottom of this web page you will find links to the websites of all of the schools in our area.

Whichever school you choose for your child, we will try to make the transition as easy as possible, working in close partnership with the school of your choice.

During September/October each year, all of the local secondary schools will hold open days/evenings for prospective pupils and their parents. This will provide you with an opportunity to look around the school and to meet the Head Teacher, staff and pupils. We would recommend that you begin to look at schools when your child is in Year 5 although some parents do leave it until Year 6.

Gloucestershire County Council will produce a booklet and on-line guidance about the whole process of secondary school application, complete with dates of open days for each school in September each year.

In the Autumn Term of Year 6 we will hold a meeting in school to explain the process of applying to secondary schools and to answer any questions or concerns you might have. Usually the Principals of Cleeve School and Winchcombe School attend this meeting.

In September/October each year, one of the local Grammar schools will host the Grammar School entrance examination for those children considering applying to grammar school.

In October of Year 6, you will need to complete an application form, listing the secondary schools in order of choice. This application can be completed on-line or it can be posted (if you choose to post it, our experience has shown that you should keep a copy and obtain a proof of posting).

In April of Year 6, you will receive notification of your allocated school. There will be an opportunity to appeal against the decision should you not receive the school of your choice.

During the summer term, Cleeve School and Winchcombe School invite the Year 6 pupils to the school on two or three separate days. The first day is an Induction Day where they will meet their Tutor and Tutor Group. They will also take part in a science/art day and may also visit on a third day to watch a school production. Similar arrangements are made for children who will be attending other schools. We find that this really helps to reassure the children about the next stage of their education. The secondary school will also provide you with all of the information that you need before your child starts in September.

Hopefully this information will provide the answers to most of your questions but please do not hesitate to ask if there is anything else you wish to know or anything that you feel you might need help with.
